Funny I Dreamed About You Lyrics
FlourishAnyway believes there is a playlist for just about any situation and is on a mission to unite and entertain the world through song.
Dream On!
There's nothing so practical as a dream, well-formed. Every invention, discovery, creative masterpiece, and impossible accomplishment started as an idea, then blossomed from there. But dreams are also small business start-ups, college degrees, and marrying the right person. They are common miracles.
Many years ago, a teenage friend and I passed a freshly boarded-up gas station that had gone out of business. It was just a defunct gas station to me. Her misty eyes perceived otherwise.
"How sad. That was somebody's life dream." Her parents had just lost their own family business. They were moving out of town so they could find other work and begin again.
Dreams aren't just about sleep. They very much inhabit our waking worlds. Whatever your dreams are, I hope you are diligently working towards them to make them reality.
Celebrate the value of dreams and dreaming with a playlist of pop, rock, and country songs about them. We have a long list below to get you started. Dream on!
1. "American Dream" by MKTO
This 2014 pop song reflects the changing American dream. The narrator and his friend have escaped their small town life, with dreams of heading to California. Rather than seeking a family with 2.2 kids, they want new adventures and experiences on their own.
The narrator points out that the American dream referenced by John Cougar Mellencamp in his 1982 song "Jack and Diane" has shifted significantly:
This ain't the same summer song that you used to know
'Cause Jack left Diane thirty years ago
The world is spinning too fast for you and me
So tell me whatever happened to the American dream.
2. "All I Have to Do Is Dream" by The Everly Brothers
The guy in this 1970 rock song is upset that he is separated from his beloved. However, he finds comfort in one thing to bridge the distance between them: dreaming.
Whenever he misses her—day or night—his dreams make it seem like she's almost right by his side. The trouble is that his strategy will only keep him satisfied for so long.

3. "Dream On" by Aerosmith
Steven Tyler took six years to write this 1973 rock anthem, and it became Aerosmith's first single. The song is about both the process of growing more mature and the internal quest to become somebody. Named one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, it motivates the listener to keep striving until you realize your dreams.
4. "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" by Billy Ocean
Did this approach ever work? The creepy narrator in this 1988 hit sees the woman of his dreams and tries to be a smooth operator. He yells out to her to get her attention:
Get outta my dreams
Get in to my car
Get outta my dream
Get in to the back seat baby
Get in to my car.
5. "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House
In this 1986 ballad, the narrator describes the tumultuous challenges that he and his friend must face. Amidst all the turbulence, he warns that although outside forces will try to build walls between them, they must stick together. "Don't ever let them win," he cautions.
6. "In Sleep" by Lissie
At the center of this ballad from 2010 is a love forsaken narrator. She has lost her sweetheart, and the only place she can see him is in her dreams. She thus retreats to the world of sleep they can be together, if only fleetingly.
7. "Dream" by Imagine Dragons
In this somber song from 2015, the narrator shuts out the chaotic world in favor of living in a more hopeful and organized dream world of his own making:
We all are living in a dream,
But life ain't what it seems.
Oh, everything's a mess
And all these sorrows I have seen
They lead me to believe
That everything's a mess.
8. "Just a Dream" by Carrie Underwood
In this sad country ballad from 2007, a grieving teenage bride shows up to the chapel in her wedding gown. However, instead of getting married today, she will be burying her soldier groom. Oh, how she wishes it were all just a dream.
9. "Dreamlover" by Mariah Carey
We each have different definitions of a dream lover, but in this 1993 pop song, Mariah Carey seeks a perfect lover to rescue her. Rather than a pretender, she wants the real deal, someone who will be accepting, uplifting, and understanding of her needs. And on top of all this, she's seeking a forever commitment.
10. "Wildest Dreams" by Taylor Swift
Sometimes you find Mr. Right. Sometimes you find Mr. Right Now.
Taylor Swift's narrator describes a romantic rendezvous with a handsome lover in this 2014 song. Even though he is charming and irresistible, she knows their relationship won't last. Our narrator ventures off with him on the condition that he remember her fondly, even if it's only in his wildest dreams.
11. "Just a Dream" by Nelly
Recalling a lover who has left him, the heartbroken guy in this 2010 song regrets not proposing to his ex-girlfriend. In his mind, he travels back down the road and considers all the mistakes he made. He realizes, however, that it was just a dream. Alone now, he can't fix the past.
12. "Dream Baby Dream" by Bruce Springsteen
This is a simple but inspiring 2014 song, originally recorded by the electro-pop band Suicide in 1979. If you know the lyrics "dream baby dream," you know a lot of the song already. It's an inspiring, energetic song that motivates the listener to do the following:
- open up your heart,
- dry your eyes,
- smile, and
- dream.
Can you follow that simple recipe?
13. "A Head Full of Dreams" by Coldplay
Celebrate the infinite possibilities that exist inside of you with this 2015 song. It is one of hope and looking forward:
You can see the change you want to
Be what you want to be
When you get a head
A head full of dreams.
14. "These Dreams" by Heart
In this 1986 rock song, the narrator describes a world of fantasy that she enters each time she falls asleep. Seeking to hide from the pain of her ordinary life, the narrator lives a parallel reality in her dreams.
The Meaning of 10 Common Dreams
Dream | Meaning | Dream | Meaning |
---|---|---|---|
death | there's an important, dramatic change in your life | nudity | you're feeling exposed or vulnerable |

falling uncontrollably from a great height | lack of control over your life circumstances; something in your life is moving rapidly in the wrong direction | pregnancy & birth | creativity and the desire to generate a new idea |
being lost | worry about finding your way with a new life situation | baby | there's something new in your waking life |
15. "Had a Dream (For the Heart)" by The Judds
Obsessed about a lover who has left her, the heartbroken protagonist in this 1983 song dreams about his unlikely return. She is lonesome and realizes that her sad heart just cannot love anybody but him.
16. "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics
The narrator in this 1983 hit is satisfied with her relationship which she describes as sweet dreams. At the same time, however, she realizes that everyone is looking for something unique and different in their interactions with others:
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you.
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused.
She prods the listener to "keep your head up, movin' on," rather than being shamed by what you seek.
17. "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac
At the time of this 1977 rock hit, Stevie Nicks was involved in a deteriorating relationship with fellow Fleetwood Mac member Lindsay Buckingham. This song was her invitation that he leave their relationship; she wanted out as well. He responded with the harsher 1977 song, "Go Your Own Way."
18. "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright
The narrator in this soft rock song from 1975 seeks refuge from the worries and pain in his everyday life. He allows his dreams to whisk him away to an astral plane, a highway of fantasy.
19. "Sweet Dreams" by Beyoncé
The woman in this 2008 song goes to sleep each night hoping that she'll see her Prince Charming again in her dreams. His love is too good to be true, and she can't wait to drift away to dreamland to be with him again.
20. "The River of Dreams" by Billy Joel
This 1993 song is full of symbolism. In the middle of the night, the protagonist sets off in his dreams on a trek looking for something that was wrongfully taken from him. Through a jungle of doubt and the desert of truth, he walks until he comes to a river too wide to cross.
Then he stands at the shore, peering at the opposite side for what he's been looking for. He wades in the river of dreams and contemplates the afterlife.

Questions & Answers
Question: What song has the lyrics "when it comes to making dreams"?
Answer: The following song is the only one I found: "All Mixed Up" (1996) by Red House Painters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQSUIRDs6VE. Hope this is what you were looking for.
Question: Which song has the lyrics, "goodbye dreams"?
Answer: The song you are looking for is by The Kinks, called "Salvation Road" (1973). YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hO0CIqSknQ. Here are the lyrics from that part of the song:
And we'll all sing a song
As we walk down Salvation Road.
Goodbye youth, goodbye dreams,
The good times and the friends I used to know.
Question: How can I find the song lyrics for "Always Dreaming" by Jon Nicholson played on Margaritaville radio?
Answer: I've been unable to find these lyrics through the normal channels, however he is on Facebook and Twitter. Since you're a fan, why not connect with him on social media and ask him the question?
Question: Who sings a song about dreaming that has words of "when I'm 20 the," "when I'm 30," and "when I'm 60"?
Answer: Those are some really specific lyrics, but I found nothing in a lyrics search that fit those exact specifications.
Lukas Graham released a very popular 2015 song called "7 Years" that tells the retrospective story of growing up and growing older. Several ages were profiled, including ages 20, 30, and 60. Since this is probably not the song you're referring to (as it's not about dreaming), leave a message in the Comment Section regarding the following to provide further clues:
1) genre (country/rock/pop, etc.)
2) about when was this song popular?
3) did an individual/group or male/female sing it?
4) anything you recall about the plot or other aspects of this dreaming song?
5) I assume this is an American song?
Leave the details in the Comments Section of the Dreams Playlist, and I'll be happy to try to locate it.
Question: There's a song, "I have had a lot of big dreams." Who sings it?
Answer: What I found based on that limited information -- and not knowing whether it was a lyric or title or what the genre is -- turns out to be a soft rock song from 1985 called "Just As I Am" by Air Supply. The first line is a near-perfect match:
I've had a lot of big dreams
I've made a lot of bad moves
I know you could walk away
But you never do ...
If this isn't it and a reader knows the song you're referring to, I hope they'll leave a note in the Comments Section of the playlist article.
Question: What song by a black male has the lyric, "darling I'd do it all for you"?
Answer: The information you've given me is sparse and isn't a direct hit with what I've come up with. It would have been helpful to know the genre (pop, rock, country, etc.), what decade the song was popular and any other hints.
However, here's the best I could figure:
Denroy Morgan had a soul song that was a hit in 1981. It referenced the lyrics, "You make my dreams come true" (which is why I figured you have this question under the Dreams Playlist). The title of the song is, "I'll Do Anything for You" and here are the lyrics that are close but not quite what you recall:
"Nothing in the world that I won't do
I'll give the world to you if you want me to
I'll do anything
Ah, nothing in the world that I won't do
I'll give the world to you if you want me to
I'll do anything...."
Is this it? I'm betting (and hoping) so! Here's the song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnC5zgdr06c.
Question: I'm looking for a song with the title, "We Have a Dream for You." Can you help?
Answer: The closest thing seems to be the Casting Crowns' 2014 song, "Dream for You" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8nsJZx8eWw
Question: I'm looking for a classic rock song with an amazing guitar hook throughout, and I'm sure I heard the lyrics, "I've got dreams to remember" in there. It seems that the word "dreams" was used several times in the song. My search keeps bringing up Otis Redding, but it's certainly not him. Do you have any thoughts?
Answer: There are many artists who have covered that song. In an advanced search that I did, approximately 25 artists came up, including artists as varied as Aretha Franklin, Keith Richards, Toots Hibberts, and Delbert McClinton. Thus, is it possible that you are remembering someone else who sang the song, such as prominent guitarist Warren Haynes, known for his work with the Allman Brothers, David Allan Coe, and his association with the Grateful Dead? Here is a YouTube link to the impressive rendition of the song by Warren Haynes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgX1k8bbXsk.
Question: What is the song that ends with "I wake from dreams and find that I'm alone"?
Answer: I think the song you want is below, although note that I could not find any song that fits your exact description. I searched several lyrics databases, and this is the closest. It ends with lyrics that closely resemble what you offer -- "find that I'm alone" -- and the theme of the song is dreaming.
"Nightmare" (2007) by Vanilla Sky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1ei9nEg3Ws
Ending lyrics:
I can remember
What happened before
Should I wake up and call you out loud on and on
And it makes me feel bad
When I find that you're not here
And it makes me so scared.
When I find that I'm alone.
Hope this helps!
Question: There's a song which includes the line, "All in a dream" Who sings it, please?
Answer: Although I wish you had given more information such as genre, the type of singer (group/individual, male/female), or approximate year released, I can offer some possibilities. There are a number of songs that include that line. Here are three:
1) "After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young (1970) (later covered by many other artists)
2) "In a Dream" by Rockwell (1997)
3) "Catch Me While I'm Sleeping" by Pink (2003)
Question: Can anyone remember either the song or the band from the 1980s that had a lyrics "caught in your dream sleep"?
Answer: The quoted lyrics may not be fully accurate. However, I did find two 1980s songs by bands with similar lyrics:
"Head Over Heels" (1982) by ABBA: "And we were caught in our sleep"
"Deep Sleep" (1982) by Devo: "I've been caught inside a deep sleep"
Question: What are the lyrics to "Night Dreams" by Johnny Mathis?
Answer: This 1968 song was a non-album track, the "B" side to "You Make Me Think About You" and its lyrics are very hard to come by. They were not available in several search engines I checked. However, you could probably transcribe them from the song itself. Here it is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To046YtkIpQ.
Question: What song has the lyrics, "dream, dream, dream"?
Answer: There are two songs:
1) Johnny Mathis' "Dream Dream Dream" (1964) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXQma1D3NAk
lyrics:
Just close your eyes, forget your sighs a little while
dream dream dream.
Each little tear will disappear into a smile
dream dream dream.
Though your lucky day seems far away
and your plans go wrong
Build you castles high and by and by
love will come along
It's wonderful, how wonderful the world will see
dream dream dream.
Though your lucky day seems far away
and your plans go wrong
Build you castles high and by and by
love will come along
It's wonderful, how wonderful the world will see
dream dream dream.
2) "All I Have to Do Is Dream" by The Everly Brothers (1958) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbU3zdAgiX8
lyrics:
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you
All I have to do is dream
Dream, dream, dream
When I feel blue in the night
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you
All I have to do is dream
I can make you mine
Taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is
Gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away
I need you so, that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you
All I have to do is dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
I can make you mine
Taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is
Gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away
I need you so, that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you
All I have to do is dream
Dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream
Question: I've had this song in my head all day. It's a classic 80s rock sound, but sort of a sad or emotional tune. All I can really remember is the chorus starting something like "and I can't dream of yesterday" or " from yesterday." It sort of sounds like REO Speedwagon. Any idea?
Answer: Taking a look at the lyrics you offer, a search reveals the following: "Easier Than This" by Ra (2008) or "I Miss Us" by Kenny Loggins (2003). I'm not sure about the REO Speedwagon sound. Loggins' song seems to match that a little more.

The question about "I've got dreams to remember": maybe he's thinking of John Mayer's live rendition of Gravity? That starts with the opening lines of the Otis Redding song, and being John Mayer it's full of little riffs and hooks that get into your brain, just beyond the conscious zone..

Linda Noviello - I'm hoping another reader can help. I cannot find a lyrics match for "I thank you for being more than a dream." I suspect this may not be exactly the right lyrics. I did a search on "more than a dream" and then looked at 1960s songs and there are songs that fit that description, such as "Carrie" by The Hollies. Hoping someone can chime in.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on March 05, 2019:
Anonymous - Sorry, but this doesn't prompt anything in my memory. I'm hoping a reader might know. If anyone knows, please leave us a comment.

A few years ago, there was a music video where a young woman (the singer) was supposed to meet her boyfriend/lover at a hotel. He's late and she falls asleep once or twice, each time dreaming about him. Desperate to see him, she even breaks a flower vase on her head so she can dream of him again. In the end, he never comes. It was a funny/cute video. Do you know of it, please?

"My Wish" by Rascal Flatts.... I hope your dreams stay big and your worries stay small.
"Made to Dream" by Jackie Evancho. I think I spelled her name right.
Shannon Henry from Texas on January 26, 2018:
Hi Flourish,
I am working on a hub about dreaming and achieving dreams right now. How great to find this hub. Although, I am surprised that the song from Cinderella is not on here. "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes " or something like that. I'll let you know if I think of any others since I am looking for a song.

Paula - Thanks for your compliment and for being so supportive. I added Mr. Sandman. With about a foot of snow here now (I know that's laughable to you), it feels like a dream. Stay warm where you are and have a great weekend.
Suzie from Carson City on January 07, 2017:
Flourish...I just love your song hubs. i especially can appreciate the massive work you put into creating each one!..This is great (as they all are, it's good to remember some of them as they play in my head. So many that I loved!....The Eurythmics...Sweet Dreams! Yes.
I surprised myself not only knowing the majority of these tunes, but (unless I missed them) I even thought of a few. OLD OLD ones! Too old for you to have heard at the time of their release.
You can find them on YouTube if you want to hear them. In 1958 "Jimmy Clanton" gave us "Just a Dream." Oh sigh. Although I was only 10 yrs. old, he was my pre-teen idol.. LOL 1964, "Dreamin" by Johnny Burnette (tragically killed in a boating accident at 30-something) That's a good OLDIE too...
And the "Chordettes"!!!! singing 4-part harmony to "Mr. Sandman." That was a good one to sing-along to! LOL. Wow, I just gave away my age, that's for sure!
Thanks again for the great Music Hub! Peace, Paula

Just loved this and had me humming some of the songs. You know what sometimes gets a bit confusing is that there are some singers like Roy Orbison has a number of songs about dreams and dreaming. Anyway great job as always.

Linda - Oh, that's so funny! I can almost see it down, perhaps from the vantage point of another driver on the interstate or stopped at a red light looking over. Too funny! Adding that one!

Oh Flourish, so many sweet songs here in your list. However, when Aerosmith comes on the radio, it's best if my kids are not in the car. I embarrass them with my head banging. I also love "Enter Sandman" (gosh, am I revealing that I might be a closet metal head?) Thank you for this hub!
Heidi Thorne from Chicago Area on November 16, 2016:
Even before I scrolled through I thought of the Everly Brothers track. Another list with lots of favorites! And, in agreement with our pal, billybuc, if I can recall the Everly Brothers, I'm getting old. :) Keep the hits coming!

Songs I know of but you got me thinking here about these songs some I haven't heard of in a while.Songs I don't hear in Croatia.
Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on November 15, 2016:
Thanks for underscoring the power of dreams. I call myself a late dreamer, nor remembering any significant dreams that I dreamed real early, but I'm still dreaming. Based on your meaning of dreams, I am hopeful.

Peg - Thank you so much for your kind kudos. I didn't realize there were so many "dream" songs. Have a great week!
FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on November 15, 2016:
Linda - That's what I found as well -- different interpretations of what a dream means to people. Some people were literal with dreams being sleepy dreams or daydreams while others considered them more of hopes and dreams ambitions or the difficult to define American Dream. Thanks for visiting. Have a great week.
Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on November 14, 2016:
I enjoyed reading the quotations on the photos. Of course, I enjoyed reading the rest of the article, too! It's interesting to see how the topic of dreams has been interpreted in different songs.
Genna East from Massachusetts, USA on November 14, 2016:
Ah, to dream! Our dreams and hopes are part of the miracles of humanity. I have been listening to these songs, and it has been such a treat. After the turmoil of this past week, nothing could be better. (And I never knew the story behind Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams.") Thank you!
Nell Rose from England on November 14, 2016:
I love these songs! there are loads aren't there? Your hubs are fab, I always ended up singing or tapping my feet! lol!
